A Fireside Chat with Vu Le & Angie Kim

The pandemic has highlighted both the strengths of the nonprofit sector, and also a bunch of things we suck at. There are lots of great things going on, and a lot of crappy stuff. Vu and Angie will have an informal, probably profanity-laden fireside chat, where we discuss what’s working and what’s not. Our sector’s involvement and lack thereof in advocacy and politics. The difference between conservative and progressive foundations and nonprofits and why the former has been so much more effective. The need for us all to confront the racism and inequity inherent within our field. The wrong lessons we are learning and what the right lessons are. And possible solutions we all need to embrace. Get ready to get provoked, maybe pissed off. There might be puppets.

Vu Le (“voo lay”) is a writer, speaker, vegan, Pisces, and the former Executive Director of RVC, a nonprofit in Seattle that promotes social justice by developing leaders of color, strengthening organizations led by communities of color, and fostering collaboration between diverse communities. Vu’s passion to make the world better, combined with a low score on the Law School Admission Test, drove him into the field of nonprofit work, where he learned that we should take the work seriously, but not ourselves. Known for his no-BS approach, irreverent sense of humor, and love of unicorns, Vu has been featured in dozens, if not hundreds, of his own blog posts at NonprofitAF.com, formerly nonprofitwithballs.com

Angie Kim is the president & CEO of the Center for Cultural Innovation which is a conduit for resources to flow to individuals in the arts and an incubating platform for generating new knowledge and innovative solutions. In 2019, CCI launched a new, time-limited, and national special initiative called AmbitioUS, which supports trailblazing projects aimed at alternative economic solutions to problems plaguing artists and the millions of other gig workers who share their conditions of low and unpredictable incomes, lack of worker protections, high amounts of debt, lack of assets, and thin credit files.
