THE ART OF PERSUASION: MAKING BETTER DEALS

Are you uncomfortable putting a financial value on your work and talking with clients, vendors and suppliers?   This two-part workshop will give you tools and tactics to use when negotiating for yourself.  You’ll explore various methods and tactics through interactive exercises and role-plays where you’ll learn what, when, how and with whom to negotiate. Participants will leave the sessions with the confidence to ask for what they want and the skills to get it.

This workshop will take place over two 3-hour sessions with topics to include:

  • Becoming familiar with the different types of negotiation methods and when to use them
  • Understanding positions versus interests
  • Setting targets / pricing
  • Making and responding to offers
  • How and when to make concessions
  • Avoiding miscommunication
  • Time factors
  • Framing your proposals
  • When to walk away
  • Useful negotiating tactics and counter-tactics

Nancy James Fox's knowledge of negotiating and consensus building is founded upon extensive training and study of the most noted authorities on the subject. However, it is Nancy’s application of these practices throughout her career that has given her unique insights to the field. As CEO of the Museum of Latin American Art from 2000-2007, she led a capital campaign and expansion project that doubled the size of the facility and catapulted the organization to international recognition. Over the course of her career, her negotiation skills have returned literally millions of dollars to her employers, and her passion for the subject led to the founding of her negotiation workshop business in 2010. Nancy earned her B.A. from Macalester College and an advanced degree from the Conservatory of Music in Frankfurt, Germany. She participated in the LA County Arts Commission’s Arts Leadership Initiative and subsequently earned the Executive Leadership in the Nonprofit Arts Certificate from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.  She is also a DRPA-Certified Mediator. Ms. Fox served on the California Association of Museums’ Board of Directors for ten years.
