DCA/CCI "Hear in L.A." Program

Requests for original songs by unsigned L.A. artists

The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) seeks to recognize promising Los Angeles musical stars creating original songs in all genres of music (Rock, Latin, Pop, Rap, Jazz, R&B, Electronic/Dance, Instrumental...) Starting this Fall, DCA will seek unsigned LA musicians/groups and pay each act for permission to play one original composition as the hold music on City of LA 311 phone lines.  This new program is called Hear in L.A.

Each September/October, DCA in partnership with the Center for Cultural Innovation (CCI), will review, compile, fund, and promote an annual collection of new songs to showcase promising musical acts for telephone callers while they are on hold with the City's 311 call-center.

In order to cross-promote the selected talent, artist headshots and biographies will be posted on the City of LA DCA website, http://www.culturela.org.

In the pilot year of this program, DCA and CCI are seeking ten to fifteen commissions of $500 each.  The deadline for the pilot year has passed. Please check back for 2008 deadline.

DCA grant program staff will pre-select 25 or more songs for final review.  DCA and CCI will assemble a panel of music professionals to jury the winning selections.

Finalist will be notified and asked to submit a lyric sheet so that the language and symbolism of the selected songs can be reviewed and approved for general audiences.  Artists will then be asked for a biography and photograph to be posted on http://www.culturela.org.

The selected songs from the pilot year will play through the Fall of 2008.
