Investing in Creativity A Study of the Support Structure for U.S. Artists
By Maria-Rosario Jackson, Florence Kabwasa-Green, Daniel Swenson, Joaquin Herranz, Kadija Ferryman, Caron Atlas, Eric Wallner, Carole E. Rosenstein

Published by The Urban Institute. Copyright 2003.
107 Pages. Available in its entirety in the Portable Document Format (PDF). Order online through www.urban.org.

This important and timely study makes the point that in order to make a real difference in the creative lives of artists, we will need to develop a new understanding and appreciation for who artists are and what they do as well as new financial resources from a variety of stakeholders. The study also stresses that in order to bring about positive change that benefits artists, arts administrators, funders, government, business and artists themselves will have to be involved in and committed to change.

“This study, which includes information on ways in which the environment of support may be improved over the long haul, offers a real opportunity to make a difference in the artistic landscape of the country. We hope it receives a wide readership and that its useful insights can prove the basis for a new approach to investing in creativity.”Allison R. Bernstein, Vice President, The Program on Knowledge, Creativity and Freedom, The Ford Foundation
